ProFractional® Er:YAG laser resurfacing treatment - FAQ

restore youthful skin

What is it?

Profractional® is the latest technology available in skin rejuvenation treatments.  Using an ablative Erbium:Yag combination laser, thousands of tiny micro channels are created in the skin from 25um (0.025mm) to 1500um (1.5mm) deep as determined by your physician.  The channels are 250um (0.25mm) in diameter and are distributed in a pixel-type pattern (similar to ink on the printed newsprint page).  This stimulates a natural healing response in the skin which grows new healthy collagen that fills the channels, thereby improving quality of skin, texture and tone.  Only 1% up to 60% of the skin is treated, leaving the remaining skin (99% to 40%) intact making this a very tolerable treatment with little or no downtime.

What can it treat?

The following conditions can be treated with dramatic results:

  • Acne scarring (even depressed scars)

  • Traumatic scars

  • Wrinkles (even smokers' lines)

  • Rough skin

  • Sun damaged skin

  • Melasma ("pregnancy mask")

What areas can you treat?

Face, necks, chest, arms, hands are the most common areas treated.

Is it painful?

For most treatments, there is virtually no pain and topical numbing creams are usually not necessary.  For more serious conditions, more aggressive settings are required and topical numbing creams are utilized to make the procedure more comfortable.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects are mild swelling, redness and redness.  With more aggressive treatments, small amounts of bleeding, and bruising can occur.

How much downtime should I expect?

For light treatments (e.g. up to 100um treatments), little or no downtime.  For deeper treatments (100-200um) about one to two days of redness and swelling.  For 300 to 400um treatments, anticipate three to four days of redness with rapid healing and resolution of redness and swelling.   By seven days, most clients are fully healed.

How many treatments are required?

This depends on the type of condition being treated and how much downtime you are prepared to accept.  For mild conditions, 1 to 3 treatments are recommended.  For more severe conditions 4 to 6 treatments may be recommended.  The Harris Clinic physicians will recommend a treatment regimen for you after assessing your condition.

How much improvement should I expect?

With adequate treatment and depending on the condition being treated, you can expect up to 50 to 60% improvement in surface texture and scarring.

Is it safe?

At the Harris Clinic, your treatment is administered only by qualified, trained, and insured professional physicians.  You will be wearing protective eyewear and/or your physician will use a special metal shield to protect your eyes so that your lower eyelids can be treated as well.  The Profractional® has Health Canada approval for safety and efficacy as a medical treatment.

How long does it take for a procedure?

A full face will take about 30 minutes to do.

How much does it cost?

Pricing varies depending on the areas you would like treated.  For a full face, pricing starts at about $500 per treatment.  Please come in for a complimentary consultation for more detailed pricing and special packages.
